EDMONTON—Alberta has fired a shot across the bow of the federal government in the contentious debate over its proposed firearms restrictions.

The province — a loud critic of federal Bill C-21, which is proposing to usher in sweeping bans that detractors say will affect hunting rifles and firearms used for target shooting — says it’s taking jurisdiction around firearms away from Ottawa.

Instead of federal lawyers pursuing charges under the Firearms Act, the Alberta Crown Prosecution Service, which was given a new protocol by the provincial government, will decide whether charges will be sought, the province announced.

The standoff appears to be the latest escalation over what has been an increasingly controversial issue for the federal Liberals, as well as further pushback from an Alberta government that recently drew a line in the sand by adopting a Sovereignty Act, ostensibly to limit federal overreach.

They're acting like Quebec did a while back... wanting everything a big country provides but on their own terms alone, free to ignore any federal law, etc that makes them cry.

And they don't quite understand that if they actually got their wish and separated, they'd still be in between 2 other Canadian provinces that they'd have to negotiate with, and on much less favorable grounds then if they'd stayed.
