Evers calls for special session to ban partisan gerrymandering

Gov. Tony Evers has ordered Wisconsin lawmakers to return for a special session next month to consider a constitutional amendment aimed at ending partisan gerrymandering in state legislative districts.

But with Republicans controlling the Legislature, the odds of the session actually passing anything are low, and it remains an open question whether Evers could find support for the plan in his own party.

The order requires the state Legislature to convene on April 14 and take up a constitutional amendment that would prohibit lawmakers from giving disproportionate partisan advantage when they redraw state Assembly and Senate maps every 10 years.

“Fair maps mean elected officials have to listen and do what’s best, not for their party or their own political interests, but for the people they represent,” Evers said at a press conference Tuesday, where he stood flanked by Democrats and activists.
