A former West Virginia news anchor has filed to run as an independent in the race for retiring Sen. Jay Rockefeller's (D-W.Va.) seat.
Martin Staunton announced earlier this week on his Facebook that he filed his candidacy on Tuesday, and said he's looking to win.

Staunton spent decades as a reporter and anchor for stations in Charleston and Beckley, according to the Charleston Daily Mail, which first reported news of his candidacy.

He'll face Rep. Shelley Moore Capito (R), who announced early on that she'd be running for the Republican nomination for the seat.
No Democrat has yet made a bid official, but Secretary of State Natalie Tennant and state Senator Erik Wells, as well as local attorney Nick Preservati, are all considering a run.

(28,447 posts)2. I think Capito (R) will probably pick up this Senate seat.
Obama's push for new gun control legislation will definitely hurt any Democrat's chances, but Capito would probably win anyway. Looks like our best hope would be Natalie Tennant. An Independent candidate like Staunton would siphon votes away from the Capito.
I really hope I'm wrong. I really don't like Capito and I didn't like her father, ex-Governor and convicted felon Arch Moore.
Thanks for asking.

On this one.
Martin Staunton is delusional.

John Raese might go up against Capito in the Primary. That would be good.
But I think he won't.
