Ex-magistrate embezzlement case may not reach grand jury until 2018

The prosecutor in an embezzlement investigation involving a former Kanawha County magistrate says it could be next year before she can determine whether to present the case to a grand jury.

Raleigh County Prosecuting Attorney Kristen Keller was appointed in September as special prosecutor in the investigation into former Kanawha magistrate Julie Yeager, who is accused of taking money from the West Virginia Magistrate Association while serving as the group's treasurer.

Keller said last week that Kanawha sheriff's detectives were still investigating the alleged embezzlement. She hopes she'll get the results of the investigation by the end of this month, and can't know before she sees those results if she'll present the case to a grand jury.

If the case is presented to Keller later than the end of this month, she said, it could be January before it would be presented to a grand jury.
