Spokane begins hosting the 2026 Washington State Democratic Convention, running from Juneteenth to the summer solstice
Greetings from the Lilac City and happy Juneteenth! This weekend is the biennial Washington State Democratic Convention, the highest authority of the Evergreen States dominant political party. Over two packed days, delegates will be convening caucus and council meetings, attending organizing and policy sessions, discussing how Democrats can continue advancing progressive priorities in the Legislature and throughout the state, and adopting a platform and resolutions.
Three of us from Northwest Progressive Institute are here in Spokane to bring you coverage of the event; well bring you updates here throughout the weekend.
As one of Washingtons largest cities, Spokane has become one of several rotating hosts of the convention, with the others being Seattle, Tacoma, Yakima, and Wenatchee. The 2008 Washington State Democratic Convention took place here, as did the 2014 convention. Spokane has also hosted several state central committee meetings in between those conventions. The state central committee governs the party in between conventions and elects a set of four officers: chair, vice chair, secretary, and treasurer. Our founder and executive director has served on the WSDCC since 2013.
The convention is taking place as the Spokane region continues to contend with hot weather and the effects of a nearby wildfire. With daytime temperatures reaching above eighty degrees, wildfire conditions remain a concern for area residents.
