WA population tops 8 million, outpacing much of the US

For the first time, Washington has surpassed 8 million residents.

The state was one of the 10 fastest-growing in the U.S. from July 2024 to July 2025, with a 0.9% population increase, almost double the national average of 0.5%. Washington now has approximately 8,001,020 residents, an increase of about 73,000 people from 2024 and about 4% more than in 2020.

Overall, Washington ranked No. 7 for percentage of population growth.

Population growth across the country was the slowest since the early period of the pandemic, with an increase of only 1.8 million people last year, due largely to the historic decline in international migration, which fell 58% to 1.3 million due in part to the Trump administration’s hardline immigration policies. Births and deaths remained relatively stable.
