Seattle Mayor Harrell wants to see a Pike Place with less car traffic

If you want to spark a robust conversation in Seattle, bring up motor vehicle traffic at Pike Place Market.

Pike Place, the cobblestoned, north-south street in front of Seattle's most popular tourist destination, often is jammed with cars moving among a never-ending stream of pedestrians.

Mayor Bruce Harrell says he would like to change this dynamic. He added that some cabinet-level departments are "working on this right now" but acknowledged any change likely is a long way off.

"I do have a vision of — I don't want to say a car-free Pike Place Market, but a very walkable area where people can enjoy a good pedestrian and shopping experience," Harrell said in a recent interview with the Business Journal. "That is a vision that I do share."
