Election 2024 Politics Arson destroys hundreds of ballots inside a Washington state drop box

The FBI and local police are investigating a deliberately set fire on Monday at a ballot drop box in southwest Washington that destroyed hundreds of ballots and they say a similar incident in Portland, Oregon is likely connected.

Secretary of State Steve Hobbs said the immediate focus is supporting Clark County’s ability to provide a “24-7” presence around its ballot drop boxes. He did not divulge specifics but said it could involve making funding available to pay individuals or acquire equipment.

Hobbs, in a statement released early Monday, said he’s confident any “impacted voter” will get a replacement ballot in time to participate in the Nov. 5 election, which is now about a week away.

Washington State Democratic Party Chair Shasti Conrad urged voters who used the dropbox to check the status of their ballots.
