For Washington and Oregon Republicans, there'll be no escape from the "twin cudgels" of Trump and abortion in 2024

In the wake of their losses in the 2022 midterms, Republican state legislators and strategists found themselves lamenting that they had no effective answer for what many of them dubbed Democrats’ “twin cudgels”: Trump and abortion.

In the Pacific Northwest, Democrats used both cudgels to great effect.

In Washington, they picked up a U.S. House seat, a state Senate seat, and a state House seat and defended their incumbents in the face of endless “red wave” talk.

Meanwhile, in Oregon, Democrats kept the governor’s mansion despite the presence of an independent candidate in the race and some polling suggesting an opening for Republicans. Democrats also won the state’s new congressional district, OR-06, and renewed their legislative majorities while narrowly losing OR-05.
