Seattle Children's receives $50 million gift for pediatric cancer research

Seattle Children's has received a $50 million gift to support research on leukemia and other pediatric cancers.

The gift, announced Thursday, comes from the William Lawrence and Blanche Hughes Foundation. Seattle Children's said in a news release it is one of the largest it has received from an individual donor since its 1907 founding.

“We are deeply grateful for the William Lawrence and Blanche Hughes Foundation and the Hughes family’s incredible generosity that will enable our talented teams to continue to expand their groundbreaking work,” Seattle Children's CEO Jeff Sperring said in the release.

Seattle Children's will use the money to develop treatments for childhood cancers using cell and gene therapies. The Seattle Children's Research Institute building at 1920 Terry Ave. is being renamed in honor of the late B. Wayne Hughes, who co-founded Public Storage and launched the William Lawrence and Blanche Hughes Foundation.
