Seattle region's plan to reduce homelessness takes big step forward

A King County Regional Homelessness Authority board on Friday signed off on a five-year plan to dramatically reduce unsheltered homelessness.

The plan relies on existing funding of around $250 million a year or a total of $1.25 billion, not the nearly $12 billion figure that was bandied about earlier this year and lambasted as infeasible.

The 10-0 vote by the authority's implementation board sends the plan to its governing committee, which includes Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell, King County Executive Dow Constantine and other elected officials.

The vote capped a dramatic week for RHA during which CEO Marc Dones resigned. Dones' role goes beyond having been the authority's first CEO. Dones also was part of a consulting team, which five years ago Seattle and King County hired to audit the region's response to homelessness. Dones went on to design what became RHA.
