Amazon sued for breaking grocery store lease in Renton

The Boston-based owner a Renton shopping center is accusing Amazon.com Inc. (Nasdaq: AMZN) of backing out of a lease in bad faith, according to a complaint filed in King County Superior Court against the Seattle-based retail giant on Monday.

The owner of The Landing said Amazon attempted to breach its lease of a 40,000-square-foot retail space that was to house an Amazon Fresh grocery store by saying it wasn't able to obtain the necessary permits, court documents show.

The lease was signed in December 2021.

According to the complaint, Amazon's reason for backing out of the lease was false and the company didn't make "commercially reasonable and good faith efforts" to obtain the permits and instead sought to shed the lease as it reconsidered its physical stores strategy.
