A Potomac High School student came to school with an unconfirmed case of frostbite Monday after Prince William County Schools remained open on a normal schedule despite wind chills in the single digits.

In an email just after 9 a.m. Monday to Potomac High School staff, Assistant Principal Malcolm Foust announced a student came to the school’s clinic with frostbite. ... “With the extremely cold weather this morning, we had a student in the clinic with frostbite on his fingers after waiting for the bus without proper winter clothing,” Foust wrote.

The school division told InsideNoVa, however, that it does not have confirmation of the diagnosis, as Potomac High School health personnel are not licensed to make a medical diagnosis of frostbite.

Foust encouraged the school staff to “keep an eye out” for any students who report having symptoms of frostbite, which include severe pain, numbness or discoloration in their fingers or hands.

who was out on the playground in temps in the 20's and wasn't wearing any socks. The Office took note.

After the dismissal bell rang, I was summoned to the Principal's Office. Not to be congratulated for being diligent and looking after that boy, but to be severely remonstrated.

The school's primary interest was to protect its federal funding. And because I reported "an incident", they had to make a record of it, which would go to D.C. And if a public school had a certain number of "incidents", it would result in losing federal dollars for being lackadaisical in not preventing accidents, welfare, etc.

I was floored that I was getting a tongue-lashing for looking after an 8 year boy.

Let's say that the school and I parted ways shortly thereafter.
