Afghans arrived near a small Virginia town, exposing two different versions of America

BLACKSTONE, Va. — Mayor Billy Coleburn finished his burger, pulled out his cellphone and braced himself for the two dozen Facebook notifications and slew of unread messages waiting for him. “Let’s see how bad they are,” he said, sitting in a booth at the Brew House on Main Street, in the town of roughly 3,600 people in rural southside Virginia.

The rumors seemed to be evolving each day, ever since an international humanitarian crisis made its way across the world and then landed in Blackstone’s backyard. Just over a mile from the town limits, past a thick tree line and behind the heavily guarded gates of Fort Pickett, there were now more Afghan evacuees than Blackstone residents.

Roughly 5,900 men, women and children who had escaped the chaos and the Taliban in Kabul were now sleeping on cots in barracks and tractor trailers at the Virginia National Guard installation, one of three military bases in Virginia where Afghans are being temporarily housed before getting resettled in communities across the United States.

There are still Americans willing to step up and help the newcomers. Misinformation from Fox and the other RW media continues to flow unchecked and work needs to be done to stop it...to contain it, to counter it.

Thanks for this link mahatma...

it was their war that caused this humanitarian crises. Oh, let's not forget Mushroom Clouds Condoleezza Rice, and You Don't know Nothing Donald Rumsfeld, and all the Media War Merchants with their band of War Hawk Generals spouting bullshit about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, but you know that's why we had to spend blood and treasure in a two decades long war in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Now, the refugees are to be settled in rural America? Really? so let's turn Virginia Red again. Great.

Not to mention Religious beliefs that send Women's Rights back to the middle ages, as if the American Taliban sitting on US Supreme Court and occupying Capitols all over the country didn't have enough power to send us back to the middle ages in their own right.

And all of this was predictable.

Infuriating.

The black churches here in Richmond are really calling for donations amongst their members.
I’ve got another load of things to take to one of the funeral homes here collecting donations.
