Astate trooper was suspended last week amid an investigation into alleged theft from a temporary evidence storage room at the Williston Barracks, according to the Vermont State Police.
Giancarlo DiGenova, a trooper who has worked for the state police since 2009, was placed on paid leave on Dec. 19, the agency said in a press release issued Tuesday evening.
DiGenova has been assigned to the Williston, Middlesex and Bradford barracks, as well as the narcotics investigation unit. He makes more than $95,000 per year, according to a state employee salary database. In 2019, the U.S. Attorneys Office for the District of Vermont awarded DiGenova its outstanding collaborative investigation award.
Police said a detective sergeant from southern Vermont has been assigned to lead a criminal investigation into the alleged misconduct. Following its completion, police said, the agency plans to conduct an internal investigation.
