Voter fatigue may impact turnout in East Texas as elections continue

TYLER, Texas — With Election Day approaching again for voters in Tyler and Longview, an East Texas political science professor said repeated trips to the polls could be contributing to lower turnout.

After months of elections and runoffs, some voters may be experiencing what political scientists call “voter fatigue,” a trend that can lead to declining participation.

“The average American is asked to go to the polls and vote significantly more times than our counterparts in other representative democracies,” said Dr. Steve Galatas, an assistant political science professor at Stephen F. Austin State University.

Galatas said frequent elections mean voters face more choices and more research, which can become overwhelming.
