Former President Donald Trump said he would consider tapping Ken Paxton for U.S. attorney general if he wins a second term in the White House, calling his longtime ally a very talented guy and praising his tenure as Texas chief legal officer.
I would, actually, Trump said Saturday when asked by a KDFW-TV reporter if he would consider Paxton for the national post. Hes very, very talented. I mean, we have a lot of people that want that one and will be very good at it. But hes a very talented guy.
Paxton has long been a close ally of Trump, famously waging an unsuccessful legal challenge to Trumps 2020 election loss in four battleground states. He also spoke at the pro-Trump rally that preceded the deadly U.S. Capitol riot in January 2021.

(860 posts)I dont believe John Cornyn or Teddy Boy Cruz would support the little weasel. Heck, when Cruz loses hell want the job.
Cornyn also is a former Texas AG. Hes not my favorite but he is semi sane.
Dont you need high level security clearance to be AG? That alone should knock out the little weasel.

(4,882 posts)Cruz opposed Paxton's impeachment. Cornyn has nothing to gain by opposing Paxton, who as US AG would no longer be a primary threat, but opposing him would result in a primary loss in 2026.
Once I would have considered some of the more established Texas Republicans to be a bit independent from MAGA, but the Texas Senate response proved that theory dead with Paxton. They ran my mega conservative state rep out of the house.
