Some Austin Energy customers may not have their power restored for another week, the utility said Sunday night.
"We are now focusing on the most complicated & time-consuming restoration efforts. Incoming wind & rain will pose additional challenges," it said in a tweet. "Based on current information, we expect to restore power to nearly all remaining customers by Sunday, Feb. 12."

Around 30,000 customers were out of power Sunday night, according to Austin Energy's outage map. The utility said residents without power who need a place to stay can call 311 or 512-974-2000 for overnight shelter.
Strong winds expected Tuesday could lead to more trees and branches falling on power lines and more damage, City Manager Spencer Cronk said at a news conference earlier in the day Sunday.

(12,904 posts)Some of the pictures I saw showed branches with ice an inch thick. That does a lot of damage.

(22,819 posts)recover from a massive ice storm like this one. Trees fall and take out power lines.
I was just in Austin and it is going to take a while; Austin has a LOT of trees.
If we had an ice storm like that one, my red oaks would be dropping branches - big heavy branches. Our neighborhood is full of large old trees; it would be a royal mess.

(198 posts)My family lived in Atlanta during the 1973 ice storm. Power was out for about a week. You'd walk outside and everything smelled on Pine-Sol from the downed pine branches. Throw in the arcs as power lines came down or transformers failed and there was a surreal beauty.
We nearly lost the house in a fire. My little brother used a candle for lighting and caught his closet on fire. Fortunately, we had a large fire extinguisher that put the fire out. The local FD stopped at the top of a hill leading to our house and since they didn't see an engulfed house, they started to leave and had to be chased down. They didn't like walking down (and up) that hill in turn out gear.

(8,555 posts)with major damage - a live oak, post oak, and three cedar elms. I've been able to clean up everything except for the cedar elms. The damage is just too high up to reach without a bucket so I'll probably have to get a tree service to do them. They are booked up for about a month. The cedar elms had already started to bud out so that probably didn't help.
We lost power for one night but it was because of tree limbs down the road from us - so thankful. I've found out that because of Climate Change and it's affects here in Texas it is beneficial to live near a hospital or school because they are usually the first to have power restored.
