I don't know much about doing this linking and excerpt thing, but there's a Democrat running for Graham's seat this November and I think it's worthwhile to check him out and consider supporting him. There are a few Repubs running in the primary and these guys think Lindsey is not conservative enough. On Mr. Stamper's page I read that earlier this year, the SC. Democratic Party essentially endorsed Lindsey Graham, saying that he was looking out for the best interests of SC. I mean seriously, what the living hell, SC Democratic Party? I actually sent money to you guys, so you could support Republicans?

(73 posts)Stamper is a candidate in the Democratic primary ,but is unlikely to win.The favored candidate is State Senator Brad Hutto.
didn't know that.

(15,261 posts)I think this may have something to do with it:
"I never meant to hurt anyone. There was no malice. In a way I was reckless but there were mitigating circumstances," he said.
Stamper moved to South Carolina a year ago to run for Graham's seat, and despite his history, he said he has found most people welcoming.
That welcoming, hospitable spirit will be important for South Carolina moving forward in growing the economy and recruiting new businesses without giving away millions in "corporate welfare," Stamper said.

(3,025 posts)I just saw that there was a Democrat running, but I know little about him.

(15,261 posts)I find it odd that here it is April and I haven't heard anything about the Dems running for G's seat. All about the R's running in the primary.
stage left
(3,025 posts)I find it odd, too. Have you read anything about Democratic opposition to Tim Scott?
mercuryblues
(15,261 posts)had 3 calls this past week from the republican party for polls. NADDA from the dem party, never do, unless they want money. I would not know who the Dem challengers were, if not for this thread.
AFAIK scott is running unopposed.

(3,025 posts)And even more reason to support either Hutto or Stamper. How the heck can a black guy belong to the Republican Party? It makes even less sense than a female Republican.

(3,025 posts)and there are two people running in the Democratic Primary.

(4,452 posts)On every level you have to go out there and search for real and accurate information. It might not be so bad on a national level but unless you have local political organizations you're pretty much screwed unless you have the time and energy to start that organization.

(3,025 posts)I've got to study up on these links things. I've just lately become more deeply interested in politics, so I'm a novice in just about all aspects. But I will learn all I can about the candidates.

(73 posts)The normal Democratic vote in statewide races in SC is between 45%-47%.Thomas Ravenel,a former Republican State Treasurer who spent federal time on drug charges ,has re emerged on the scene as star of a silly realty show on Bravo channel and as a self styled eccentric libertarian type.He is threatening to run as an Independent and to spend his own money(he is a multi millionaire) in the effort. He maintains some following particularly along the coast. There is also a Libertarian Party candidate. If Ravenel does run and he and the Libertarian get as much as 7% of the vote(a possibility )AND Hutto could poll at the outer limits for a Democrat statewide(47%) ,then he would have a shot.
Lots of "ifs" though, admittedly, but it could happen.
stage left
(3,025 posts)So the name, Ravenel, is very familiar to me. A reality show, huh? Is it along the lines of Duck Dynasty or Honey Boo Boo?
I just read a little about Hutto's stances on some of the issues. I think he's a good bit right of my position, but then so are a lot of people. I don't like that he expresses the idea that both parties are to blame for the do nothingness of the present Congress and the general state of SC. I tend to lay those things at Republican feet. But Lindsey is even further to the right and his Republican challengers are more extreme than he is.

(15,261 posts)in a nutshell.
I have always said Jesus could run as an Dem in SC and Satan as an R. Satan would win every time. Not entirely true but there is a significant segment of people who will support the R's no matter what. I see that changing slow but sure. The Dem's should have gone full bore when Sanford was taken down. They should have picked up seats. Instead they crumbled. Take a look at the Alvin Greene controversy.

It's not like the republicans in SC don't have a history of hiring blacks to run on the Dem ticket:

(3,025 posts)you're not insinuating that a good old boy right wing bible believing conservative Republican like Shealy would pull such a dirty trick, are you? (sarcasm). I too believe that old Nick could run as a Repub and win hands down in this state. Of course, as a good Democrat, I'm obliged to believe that Republicans are the Devil with a capital D. I'm at a loss to understand why people in this state vote consistently against their own best interests. Damn, they even elected that idiot Sanford to the First District. And I think Lee Atwater has a street here in Greenville dedicated to him. Southerners were played and are being played and maybe 40% of us know it.

(476 posts)Before this article was written, there were some rumors going around the Dem Party meetings as well that questioned Stamper's loyalties and his background.
As for the Dem party laying down and letting the Repubs win, I can categorically deny that! We are working very very hard to oust Mulvaney, Haley, and Graham as well as the Superintendent of Schools, Lt. Governor, and other vulnerable seats. I don't know if there is a Candidate yet for Scott's seat, if there is, it isn't a strong one yet.

(3,025 posts)Thanks for the information. I don't think I said that Democrats just lay down and let Republicans win, but if I seemed to, then I apologize. I can't really throw aspersions on anyone's efforts as I've not been exactly engaged as much as I could have been in working for Democrats to get elected. I do believe that Scott does have an Democratic opponent, but that's all I know. I began to look askance at Stamper when I realized that he had only lived here a year and that he apparently came to SC specifically to run against little Lindsey. Brad Hutto is a native South Carolinian, I believe, not that a candidate has to be that. It would be helpful to have lived in the state for awhile, however. I saw that he was one in the sub committee that brought out the latest odious zygotal person hood bill and that he voted against it. I will be looking at him more closely.

(476 posts)It was more the comment that you got from Stamper about the Democratic Party endorsing Repubs that got my dander up a little! I just attended an organizational meeting last week for the "Day of Action" planned on the 26/27. If you are in SC I suggest volunteering to get people registered and knock on doors during the event!
We have some great candidates this election, but the real key is going to be getting people out to vote. We face a number of uphill battles in the new voter id laws, midterm election, etc. but with everyone working together we should be able to pull out a surprise or two! A HUGE start would be getting Vincent Sheheen and Bakari Sellers in the Gov and Lt. Gov positions...
Thanks. I'm in SC and I will check into that.
