Confederate flag ignites battle between private Columbia school, parent

A dispute over the Confederate flag has pitted one of Columbia’s premier private schools against a parent of two of its students.

Rhett Ingram, 38, on Thursday took his 14- and 11-year-old children out of Heathwood Hall Episcopal School, the only school they’ve known, after the school adopted a policy that effectively bans the Civil War-era banner.

Heathwood officials say Ingram repeatedly had been asked not to display the flag on his pickup truck while on the school’s campus. But, they add, Ingram persisted, becoming disruptive to the school’s environment. Ingram also brought unsecured firearms onto the campus in his truck about a month ago, headmaster Chris Hinchey said Friday.

“We engaged in thoughtful conversation for over a month hoping to reach some resolution,” Hinchey said. “Just as we enforce dress codes with children ... we felt that we needed to enforce our (flag) policy.”

the real meaning of the Confederate flag.

It's a symbol not merely of rebellion but of real traitorism. Displaying that flag says you oppose the current government of your country. It is exactly like displaying the Nazi flag in Germany.

I wish that the display of that flag had been outlawed immediately after the Civil War. It needs to be seen as the real contempt for this country that it is. Sadly, those who support that flag are those who do not understand BLM or the taking to the knee during the National Anthem. They engage in a knee-jerk and thoughtless "patriotism" and give zero thought to what genuine patriotism entails.

Claims he is a "stay to myself kinda guy" yet goes around town handing out and placing confederate flags everywhere. Now he runs to the media in an attempt to get attention.

He loves America so much that he can't stand the NFL taking a knee because it is disrespectful to the flag. Then flies a huge flag of treason on the back of his truck. I am also willing to bet that his love for America entailed serving in the military either. Because if he had, he would make sure everyone knew it. FAKE patriotism.

He is mad that a private school said no to his flag of treason, yet is okay with the government laying claims on a woman's body. He is nothing but a small town bubba.
