Pa. Turnpike to phase out tollbooths statewide by 2027

Beginning Jan. 5, parts of the turnpike east of Reading and along the Northeastern Extension will switch to open road tolling

Big changes are on the way for the Pennsylvania Turnpike in the new year as it starts to replace its outdated tollbooths with unobtrusive overhead structures to reduce congestion, but residents of the western region of the state will have to wait to see the benefits.

Beginning Jan. 5, parts of the turnpike east of Reading and along its Northeastern Extension, which runs through the Delaware Valley, will switch to open road tolling, eliminating toll plazas and tollbooths to allow for free-flowing traffic.

Open road tolling will expand to Western Pa. in January 2027, said Turnpike Assistant Press Secretary Crispin Havener. The new system is the culmination of the Turnpike’s decade-long plan to modernize its operations and to meet customer expectations, he said....

The current toll booths, with their narrow lanes that slow down traffic, are set to be replaced by new structures called gantries that hang over the road and allow customers to maintain their speed, said Mr. Havener.

The gantries will scan cars that already have E-ZPass transponders, and will take high-definition pictures of cars that do not and send them an invoice later. Cars without transponders will be charged at a higher rate, but Mr. Havener said that more than 85% of customers already have transponders.

I haven't seen any human toll collectors since the Covid lockdown. I believe the Pittsburgh exits have been operating with scanners and photo gantries for the last 3 or 4 years, but perhaps the rural exits will take longer to get setup.

This is not a traffic flow system. This is a racket.

What would happen if class action against toll system as racket? Nothing I would guess, toss, but it could fit the criteria. Laws legalize rackets? I guess so. Taxi medallions.

When I 1st read OP subject my 1st thought was good for PA taxpayers.

Then I listened to my own advice, to pay attn to what is not said.

I then realized they were going to follow Illinois' system with the Ez Pass.

Ever think about how ridiculous it is for them to place a physcal barrier in the middle of the interstate just to rape your pockets.

I'll bet the mofos had a good laugh on the irony.

Laws are for thee, not for me.

Likely the toll system is privatized. Dunno if a class action suit would be successful because, well, it's sanctioned by govt.

point out it's the same heist as the turnpike.

I knew we were in trouble the first and only time I heard the song "Pennsylvania Turnpike I Love You So"

Sadly, that would likely be deemed a "terrorist" act because it would draw attn to one of the many ways we are all blatantly screwed daily.

13. Every time we buy a gallon of gas in Pennsylvania, we're kicking in for state highway repairs

However I don't believe the PA Turnpike gets any of that gas-tax money. That's why they charge tolls for their own updates and repairs. Also I think some of the turnpike toll money goes towards the PA state highway patrols. (I could be wrong.)

14. If they use it for that intended purpose & you have great roads, then fair enough

Here, by contrast, they just raised car registrstion, which they refer to as a "wheel tax," then decided to spend that money putting an expansion on a hospital.

Meanwhile, the roads are horrifc. Like hard off-roading.

are still there - this is talking about removing the physical toll booths and replacing them with metal structures that go over the road - no more slowing down to go through the booth lane, no merging of multiple booth lanes, etc.

.... once they've updated all the exits.

In all honesty, I don't drive on the PATK very often, maybe a couple times per year.
I never felt a need for one of those transponder thingies stuck to my windshield.

Breezewood used to be 85 cents (a penny a mile). The last time I drove that route a couple years ago it
close to $20. It cost more today than the gas does to cross it. When they had toll takers it costs $1 to
take the Pittsburgh airport connector. They put cameras in now it's $6.

Why do PA and WV have so many toll roads, when other states mostly do without them just fine ???
