A woman died and three others were injured when a fire ripped through an apartment in a Downtown Pittsburgh high-rise late Sunday night.

Crews tackled the blaze in the Roosevelt building at Sixth Street and Penn avenue just after 10:30 p.m. Public Safety spokeswoman Amanda Mueller said the fire was believed to have started in an apartment on the 12th floor of the 14-floor building. She said the fire was contained to the 12th floor.

City Fire Chief Darryl Jones said the woman who died was in a stairwell below the floor where the fire broke out.

The woman could not come all the way down the stairs and was met by EMS and doctors, who pronounced her dead at the scene, Chief Jones said. Her identity had not yet been released.
