Oregon voters to decide on fall ballot measure to give every resident $1,600

Oregon voters will decide this fall whether to increase corporate taxes to establish the nation’s largest universal basic income program. Funded by a new corporate tax, it would give every Oregonian an estimated $1,600 per year.

If approved, Measure 118 would institute a 3% tax on most corporations’ total sales in Oregon above $25 million and distribute the money equally among residents of all ages and incomes. The system would go into effect next year.

Proponents of the measure say it would alleviate poverty and stimulate the state economy by providing a boost to all Oregonians while also requiring corporations to pay their fair share of taxes.

“There are people all across the state that don’t have enough food to be able to pack lunches for their kiddos and they might not have enough money to be able to cover their AC bill during the summer,” said Stacey Rutland, a Portland resident working as an adviser to the campaign supporting Measure 118. “We think that it’s important to do something immediate and give (families) an opportunity to thrive and not just try to survive.”

If we can’t break up big monopolies, tax them and give some funds back to their victims.

so a family would get more, couples $3200.

I don't know how I missed this but just heard about it tonight.

I read the negative is that money that would go to fund schools and healthcare are cut because corporations will be taxed in a new way. If this passes they will have to change how other things get paid.

As a senior we could use the money, works out to a extra $266 a month. Would pay a few utilities.
