When Kyle Plush called 911, he knew his situation was dire.
The 16-year-old sophomore did not tell the authorities what had happened to him when he apparently used an automated assistant on his smartphone to make the call Tuesday outside Seven Hills School in Cincinnati. He said only that he was trapped in his minivan and could not hear them no doubt hoping they could still hear his cries for help.
Help, help, help, help, he told the dispatcher, according to 911 audio obtained by The Washington Post. Then he let out a scream: Help!
The teen, who seemed to be laboring to breathe, repeatedly asked for the police briefly pausing between each word to try to catch his breath.

(4,595 posts)And 3 teenagers that fight over who gets to drive it to school when they have an after school activity. I had no idea that something like this could ever happen.
This is assigned reading for them today.

(43,113 posts)multiple issues- the 911 personnel response, phone technology/GPS location tracking, and the safety of Honda's minivan seats.
In the last few years, we've seen more than one news story about communication delays with 911 calls and the failure to pass along information and respond in time to avert crises, especially in the state of Ohio.
I'm not familiar with the workings of police depts. which do an outstanding job for the most part, and I don't mean to pick on them or the state of OH, but am fairly certain more than one of these stories reported how 911 services are contracted and outsourced to 3rd party tech companies. The implication was that they do not always have a record of reliable systems and staff, and that's a serious matter.
Same for Honda Odyssey minivan seats recalls. These high value vehicles have an long and excellent reputation for car safety, which is the reason so many people with children purchase them.
In the Comments Section of this article there's some discussion of the efficacy and standards of cell phone GPS tracking whether using 'smart' or 'dumb phone' technology. Apparently there's a good deal of confusion and no real uniformity among the various types of mobile phones, yet.
Best of luck discussing these matters with your family, and safe travels!

One of the saddest stories I've heard lately.
Peace to Kyle's family and friends.

(43,113 posts)He phoned 911 twice starting at 3:14 pm. In the last call he mentioned the school's name "Seven Hills" & the Honda Odyssey van.
How large is the school campus and how many minivans could there be in the parking lot?
His family found him around 9 pm after they were contacted by a friend who he was supposed to meet that day.
Incredible and tragic.
