Democrats strike back at ad’s tax assertions in statehouse race

Statehouse candidate Kelly Wicks of Bowling Green has been pummeled for weeks by TV ads supporting his opponent, Theresa Gavarone, saying he doesn’t pay his taxes.

Now, Democrats are claiming Ms. Gavarone has an unpaid tax issue as well — a 2008 lien on a family business, more recent and for five times as much money.

Ms. Gavarone says the tax lien has nothing to do with her as the business was owned by her husband, Jim Gavarone, at the time.

Mr. Wicks (D.), the owner of the Grounds for Thought coffee shop, is running against Ms. Gavarone (R.), a lawyer and owner of Mr. Spots Philadelphia Steak Sandwich restaurant, for an open seat, the 3rd House District.
