Sales tax question will be on November ballot in Fargo

FARGO, N.D. (Valley News Live) - The City Commission voted 3-2 on Monday to give Fargo voters the chance to decide on a measure that will appear on the November 5, 2024, ballot.

If approved by voters, the measure would allow for a one-quarter percent sales tax exclusively for use by the Police and Fire Departments. The tax would be in place for 20 years.

The ballot question will read as follows:

“Shall the City of Fargo’s Home Rule Charter be amended to establish a one-quarter of one percent (1/4%) sales, use and gross receipts tax to extend for twenty (20) years with the funds collected from such tax to be used exclusively for fire and police operations, fire and police equipment and fire and police buildings, as provided in the Notice of Proposed Fargo Home Rule Charter Amendment as published in the Fargo Forum on the __ day of August, 2024?”

Sales tax is regressive and should always be opposed, unless you're rich. DJ Synikus Makisimus Aug 2024 #1

It hurts lower income people, because our income goes to critical purchases. Any subtraction from their income means fewer necessities. The Police and Fire Department are there to protect property. Their budget should be met with property taxes. Period.
