The general assignment reporter will pitch, report, write and produce spot news, features and enterprise stories for broadcast and/or podcast, and produce local news content for WHQR’s digital platforms. Under the supervision of the News Director, the general assignment reporter will produce offerings that reflect the standards of audio production, journalistic ethics and public service using NPR’s best practices as a model. The general assignment reporter will also serve as a substitute newsmagazine host on an “as-needed” fill-in basis.

Responsibilities:

Pitch and formulate original story ideas for air and/or podcast.

Research and build on existing enterprise stories.

Produce stories on deadline.

Work within a team environment.

Produce news-related content for social media, including but not limited to the WHQR website and the WHQR App.

Participate in live and online events making special appearances as needed.

Serve as a substitute newsmagazine host.

Other duties as assigned.

Required Skills and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in Journalism or Communications and/or equivalent experience necessary.

Excellent verbal and written skills.

Ability to report and write for broadcast and digital media.

Ability to use creative audio storytelling techniques.

Fluency in and ability to operate news-gathering technologies, platforms, equipment and software.

Ability to produce content for digital platforms including online and social media.

Understanding of and adherence to journalistic ethics.

Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively.

Ability and willingness to work varied shifts.
