Chanting echoed across the lawn of the State Capitol on Monday evening as around 300 protesters gathered to voice their opposition to Senate Bill 382, a controversial piece of legislation designed to provide aid to Western North Carolina.
Their voices, carried by the evening breeze, drifted from Jones Street, across Bicentennial Plaza, and reached the gates of the Legislative Building. The crowd was united in their opposition, calling for assistance to the region without undermining the power of the state's incoming Democratic governor and other elected leaders.
"This is all about trying to get power, and the people of North Carolina have spoken," said, Eshawney Gaston. "The voters have spoken of what they want, and theyre trying to overturn that."
The bill, sponsored by Republican lawmakers, aims to offer financial relief for the recovery of Western North Carolina, an area heavily impacted by infrastructure damage. However, critics argue that while the legislation includes much-needed aid, it also reduces the power of the newly elected Democratic Governor Josh Stein.
