Triad election officials advise avoiding misleading voter registration messages

GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. — Just under four months from Election Day, people across the Triad may receive messages telling them they are not registered to vote.

Charlie Collicutt, the director of the Guilford County Board of Elections, says these messages may arrive digitally or through the mail.

“I don’t know what some of these organizations do. I think that a lot of people registered and not get these texts telling them to check or telling them they’re not registered, sending them things in the mail even,” he said. “And I don’t really know what they’re trying to accomplish.”

Collicutt says whoever is sending these messages may be well-intentioned and simply trying to encourage voters to turn out. However, he says it’s not a good idea to engage with the content of the messages.

It's probably best to never directly respond to any unsolicited emails or texts about anything, and to go directly to the source of your information without using any links or addresses in those texts or emails.

That being said, it IS a very good idea to protect our registrations from rightwing voter suppression tactics and so here are 3 different sites you can use to check to be sure your registration hasn't been compromised in any way...

FIRST:
Check registration deadlines in any state here:

https://www.usvotefoundation.org/state-election-dates-and-deadlines

THEN:
Check your registration (and let others know they can check theirs) at these sites:

https://iwillvote.com/
(Be sure to choose YOUR state)

https://www.vote.org/

https://vote.gov/

Check your voter registration often, especially if you live in a state where republicans have any access to voter rolls or can effect voter registrations in ANY way.

See ya in November!
