An 18-year-old man has died after falling from a horse-drawn carriage in New York City, police have said. ... The teenager, identified locally as a tourist from India, was riding on the carriage in Central Park with three others when the driver stepped away to take a picture of the group, police told US media.
The horse then bolted, before clipping another carriage and toppling over, footage showed. ... The critically injured young man was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead. The three other passengers did not require treatment, according to reports.
"It appears the driver was at least at arm's length from his horse," Alexander Kemp, a vice president of the union, Transport Workers Union Local 100, said in a statement to local media. ... "This is unacceptable. A driver is not supposed to leave the carriage to take photos - ever. We support a full investigation."
The accident comes a week after a carriage horse called Deniz died in Central Park from eating a toxic plant, according to the initial autopsy results.

(115,100 posts)and trusted explicitly, I knew that even a small garter snake or rodent running across the barn could freak them out and serious accidents occur as a result. They are constantly "on alert" in NYC from all that is going on around them. That constant adrenaline release can be dangerous.
My sympathies to the family and friends of this young man. So sad.

(74,173 posts)his family raised arabians. he said they had a rep as the craziest breed. no idea if thats true.
he moved to tx after the divorce for several reasons, but having horses again was 1 of them. our daughter adored them. even after 1 had a freak out and kicked her in the head.
used to ride when i was younger, til i had 1 decide it was time to go back to the barn and toss me on my ass. big tall horse. i wasnt rly hurt, but it was too close of a call for me. hung up my riding boots.

my daughter used to drive in chgo. she once saw another carriage drive rt over a car. horse freaked out, driver lost control, and it went up and over. no serious injuries, thankfully.
im sad to see them go. ppl have a misguided sense of what the job is like for the horses, compared to other horses lives. used to drive her nuts when ppl wd accuse her of mistreating them. they were pampered, compared to where they came from. they were amish horses who were too tame and gentle for the amish.
