If the city is successful, this grant would help revive a historic diner on Genesee Street.
A team of local developers, including Auburn Bagel Co. owner Tony Daddabbo and Hollywood agent Matt DelPiano, has pitched a $4.8 million project to renovate Hunter Dinerant and reopen it at the same location.
However, the city which acquired the property through a tax foreclosure in 2023 wanted an operator that would move the diner to a different site. This was due to concerns about the diner, which is located over the Owasco River, if a major flooding event occurred.
At the Dec. 5 city Council meeting, Auburn City Manager Jeff Dygert reiterated the city's position that the diner's current structure and placement on piers in the river "is not safe, is not appropriate and needs to be modified."

Hunter's Dinerant was opened in 1951 by Bob Hunter, father of Neilia Hunter Biden (President Biden's late first wife). It was owned by the family until the 1990's. President Biden has visited the diner several times over the years:
Hunter Biden's given name is his mother's maiden name. Because she was born and raised in the Finger Lakes, Hunter has a tattoo of them on his back:
I live near his left shoulder blade...
