GLYNN COUNTY, Ga. – A decades-old mystery is unfolding in Glynn County after a 1979 Lincoln Continental was found submerged in a pond, potentially linked to a missing couple from 1980. The car, containing human remains, could belong to Charles and Catherine Romer, who disappeared 44 years ago.
The breakthrough began with cold case enthusiast Jason Souhrada, who used sonar equipment to identify the vehicle. Sunshine State Sonar, a volunteer diving team, confirmed the discovery, and Glynn County Police, along with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), reopened the case.

“It’s a good feeling knowing they might finally get some answers,” said Mike Sullivan of Sunshine State Sonar. “You feel for the family.”
The pond, near I-95, has been draining over the weekend to allow investigators access to the vehicle. Lawton Dodd, public information officer for the Glynn County Police, explained that the real challenge begins once the car is accessible.

Car, bone found in Georgia pond may solve 1980 disappearance of Scarsdale couple

The mystery of a Scarsdale couple's disappearance more than four decades ago is believed to have been solved following the discovery of a car with a human bone in a Georgia pond.
A 1978 Lincoln Continental found Friday matches the car Charles and Catherine Romer were driving as they returned to New York from wintering in Miami Beach in April 1980. The car had a custom license plate with the couple's initials.
The pond is near Interstate 95 next to the Royal Inn hotel in Brunswick, Georgia. The couple had checked into the hotel, then a Holiday Inn, on April 8, the last day they were seen.
Divers with the Sunshine State Sonar team from Florida searched the pond on Friday and found the submerged, badly rusted car, Glynn County police said in a Facebook post Saturday. Further search by investigators working with the Camden County, Georgia dive team recovered the bone and the pond has been drained to search for more remains, police said.
