and am thinking of moving to the Hudson Valley. Any thoughts on the most reasonable places to live, cost wise?

Thanks in advance!

5. Troy, Rensselaer, and Albany are the cheapest

Troy has a couple colleges, a vibrant makerspace, some fun restaurants.

Prices go up as you go south. If you need access to NYC then towns on the east side of the river have Amtrak service -- Hudson, Rhinebeck, Poughkeepsie, Rennselaer. Hudson is only 20% cheaper than NYC.

Beacon has a great rep.
Newburgh is high crime.
New Paltz is nice.
Woodstock is a Boomer tourist town but mostly charming.

in fact Newburgh crime rate is less than Poughkeepsie. Its been going down in recent years but NY State & Orange County use is as a dumping ground for recently release prison guests and predators.

If it was so bad all those haves wouldn't be eating along the water front or buying up properties to rehab.

properties are selling here in Orange county. I get callers wanting to know if I want to sell.

https://www.zillow.com/orange-county-ny/?

Some of the older condos and co-op units 1960s are bargains and quiet as most are older senior citizens/ Frankly they are better built .

There is a 1790s stone house for sale in the mix. Lots of McMansions

bedroom communities of NYC. New Paltz was a nice old town Clintondale, Wappingers Falls, Hyde Park, Rheinbeck were cool.. Does the CIA still serve meals on Sunday?
I would move back if it wasn't so fricken cold and the taxes so high...
Go take a ride around and see what tickles your fancy.. Easy train ride from Pgh to NYC..
I had a great time there but that was a long long time ago in another land...

interesting my town budget is 51.5 million this year recent implants want services and good schools and safety. The so-called senior housing apt complexes seem to have more people from out of the area than local.

People want clean water, sewer, garbage services, smooth town roads, shopping, safety, rec facilities, dog parks, etc.

There is a section of DOD housing for active and retired at Stewart Airport. and a condo complex too.
