N.J. university, once a women's college, selects its first Black, and first male, president

The incoming president of Saint Elizabeth University is the first African American, and first man, chosen to lead what up until five years ago was New Jersey’s last remaining all-female college.

Gary B. Crosby has been an administrator for nearly two decades and is now vice president for student affairs at Alabama A&M University.

He will become Saint Elizabeth’s eighth president on July 1, exactly one year after the private Catholic institution in Morris County — previously known as the College of Saint Elizabeth — was reclassified as a university.

Crosby is a native of Mississippi. Prior to 2019, when he began a year-long fellowship at Rutgers University, he had never visited New Jersey.
