The lease to Maxwell's, which has been at the heart of the rock scene in Hudson County for decades, is up at the end of July, but the decision to close the club at 1039 Washington St. isn't the landlord's, McCall reports.
"We were offered a renewal with rates that weren't necessarily onerous," Todd Abramson, the club's booking agent and co-owner told McCall. "But after much thought, given the changing nature of Hoboken and the difficulties of trying to run a business in this town, we decided it was time."
Maxwell's, says Abramson, will invite back some old friends to finish its remarkable run.

This makes me sad.
Walk away
(9,494 posts)I can remember breaking up with my boy friend while Dick Dale played surf riffs and celebrating at Sonic Youth's holiday concerts. It was amazing to have your local bar host the best music around in it's tiny back room.
The fondest memories I have are of the locals like Sweet Lizard Illtet and The Marys playing for their friends and Hoboken neighbors back in the 80s and early 90s before the town was overrun by rich drunk kids peeing in doorways and high rise apartment buildings that block the view.
I thought that when Blackwater Books closed it was the end of good thing. This closing officially seals Hoboken's fate as one gigantic bar without enough parking.

Parking is one of the reasons the one of the owners gave for not bothering to renew their lease when it's up. Bands have had their vans booted. Here's a link to another article about it:
