You may know the Nebraska state bird, the western meadowlark. Maybe you know the state flower, goldenrod.
Maybe you even know that our state fossil is the mammoth, and our state tree is the cottonwood, and our state gem is blue chalcedony.
So whats the Nebraska state reptile?
Well, we dont have one. At least not yet.
The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission is holding a public vote on which critter should become the states official reptile. Nebraskans are invited to choose from six options on the commissions website, http://outdoornebraska.gov/reptilevote/

(224,300 posts)I've always been partial to turtles. We had one for awhile as a pet when I was a kid, a friend of my Dad's rescued it when he saw it in the road driving over the mountain. But my Dad said we couldn't keep it forever, that it needed to be free, so we let it go by a stream in a local artist's colony. It's a beautiful place and I've often wondered if my turtle is still there.
