Outrage in Hinckley as Native students barred from performing traditional song at graduation
There have been drums and voices of protest in Hinckley this week.
The most weve been doing right now is coming out and protesting each day after school and singing and stuff, says Kaiya Wilson, a graduating senior at Hinckley-Finlayson High School. We as a people need to stay strong and we need to be respected and heard.
Dozens of students have been marching and protesting, calling for the school board to reverse its decision to bar the Ojibwe Traveling Song performance from this years graduation ceremony.
Its frustrating, it really is, declares Cyliss LaFave, also a graduating senior. We want to celebrate. We want to cherish this moment right now because you only graduate once from high school.
My experience with Native American ceremonies is they are very inclusive. This would be to celebrate all students, not just Ojibwe.

(56,896 posts)When my younger daughter graduated from her high school, except for the academic recognitions in English, the program was conducted in the local language, even though only a quarter of the students spoke it well. The girls did a traditional dance to traditional indigenous music, while the boys did one in Maori, which is apparently related, linguistically.

Well, you failed at that, sir.

as expected, it didn't have anything to do with our 2nd CD DEMOCRATIC representative at all, who is up for election in November in what is considered a highly competitive race.
