Related: About this forumQuestion re: enhanced drivers licenses
When it came time to get my license renewed I wanted to get an enhanced one. So I went to the Sec of State got all of my paperwork out including my birth certificate and my two marriage changes for my name and everything else and she said she couldn't give me one because my birth certificate first name was spelled different by one letter than EVERY other document. I have a passport (now expired and am going to get it renewed) but wanted to not take that with me for domestic flights and because the drivers license is cheaper to renew. So either I cannot get an enhanced drivers license or I have to go to a judge to get my birth certificate changed. That's what she said.... And I am asking if anyone here knows if she was just being a stickler or what???

(35,998 posts)I would give the SOS office another shot, just in case the clerk was having a bad day. If that doesn't work, I guess you have no choice but to go to your local courthouse and ask to speak to a judge. You could also contact your County Clerk's Office to see if they can help you. If your paperwork was good enough for the feds, it should be good enough for the MISOS. Good luck!

(26,849 posts)One document with a different spelling, or using a nickname instead of the name on the birth certificate, and it's a nightmare.
Here in New Mexico it's a huge problem as many Hispanics are (from my perspective) quite casual about which name, names, or nicknames they might use at any given time.
Personally, I don't want to give my Social Security number out, which is stupidly one of the requirements for the Real ID drivers license. I might show them a photo copy of my card with the first five digits blacked out, and highlight the "Not to be used for identification" line.
I intend to keep a current passport and will use that when I fly, if need be.

(49 posts)I have never encountered this before now (I am 70) and I thought SOMEONE would have noticed it before now... As I said, I have a passport, and every other form of ID in the right name But because my birth certificate is off by ONE letter, it's even in my first name not my last, they won't do it... I am finding it more and more amusing the more I look at it. Except that either way I go I have to pay money for it... Either by applying to change my name or by getting a new passport Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

(3,867 posts)A slightly different address. I asked for the supervisor and said what other form of proof of residence could I bring instead. She told me a couple, but said my voter registration was linked, so she signed off on it. Polite request to authority worked!
Never thought of that.
