MI-HD44: Democratic lawmaker seeks recount in 61-vote loss in Battle Creek House race

Democratic state Rep. Jim Haadsma has filed for a recount in a Battle Creek-area House seat that he lost by 61 votes to Republican Steve Frisbie.

Chris Trebilcock, Haadsma's lawyer, said the request is "standard" when a race is as close as the one between Haadsma, a third-term lawmaker, and Frisbie, a Calhoun County commissioner.

"We trust the hand recount will reach the correct result," Trebilcock said in a statement.

Haadsma was one of four incumbent Democratic lawmakers who were unseated in the Nov. 5 election, allowing Republicans to flip the House back to GOP control with a 58-52 majority. But concerns were raised almost immediately about the vote count in the Battle Creek-area seat.
