Right-wing provocateur uses racist language testifying against gun legislation


(Detroit Free Press) A right-wing provocateur testifying against legislation expanding a firearms ban to lawmakers' offices used a racial slur during a Senate committee hearing Thursday as he accused lawmakers of falsely attacking the gun rights of white people in the wake of President-elect Donald Trump's victory.

His actions drew strong condemnation from lawmakers.

Avi Rachlin of Detroit spoke at the Senate Committee on Civil Rights, Judiciary, and Public Safety representing "Groypers for America," an apparent reference to a network of white supremacists. "This is legislation that targets white people," he said. The bills he opposed would codify a firearm ban in the state Capitol and expand the prohibition to the buildings that house lawmakers' offices. "It is racial because the people who carry in the Capitol are primarily white. People who have (Concealed Pistol Licenses) are primarily white, and this is retaliation for the only demographic that overwhelmingly voted to support Donald Trump and that is why it is being taken out on us because you don't like us, and that's how it is."

He said to address gun violence, lawmakers should focus on young Black men whom he called the n-word.

Committee Chair, state Sen. Stephanie Chang, D-Detroit, immediately gaveled down Rachlin after he used the epithet. .................(more)
