The election is over, but Hizzoner, Mayor Pete and Speaker Joe may be getting ready to run

It may be the worst-kept secret in Michigan politics, but Duggan is expected to announce soon that he'll run for governor in 2026.

Of course, Dennis Archer was expected to kick off his campaign for a third term as Detroit mayor when he instead announced he would retire from city hall in 2001.

Nevertheless, the list of candidates hoping to move into Duggan's office on the 11th floor of the Coleman A. Young Municipal Building keeps getting longer.

I've already reported that City Council President Mary Sheffield wants the job. So does former City Council President Saunteel Jenkins, who is CEO of The Heat and Warmth Fund (THAW). Jenkins recently put out a news release declaring that she had raised more money than Sheffield in the most recent reporting period, signaling that she sees Sheffield as her main opposition.

City Councilman Fred Durhal also declared his interest in the job, but many local politicos expect him to run for council again or seek another gig. Opinion is divided on whether City Councilman Coleman Young Jr. will get in the race, or run for reelection and try to convince his colleagues to make him city council president.

He has been very good for Detroit, I was hoping he'd keep being mayor.
