Good f**king grief: Repugs want to make the AR-15 the "official" state rifle

A coalition of Republican lawmakers want to make the AR-15, a semi-automatic firearm, Michigan’s state rifle, a move that concerned gun control advocates.

HB 5792, introduced by Rep. Brian BeGole (R-Antrim Twp.), the former sheriff of Shiawassee County, would make the military-grade weapon the state’s official rifle. The goal of the new designation is to destigmatize the AR-15, and the people who own them, according to a release from BeGole.

“Millions of people across the country and thousands in Michigan own an AR-15. This distinction recognizes these law-abiding gun owners who are often vilified just for having a firearm as a hobbyist or to keep their homes and families safe,” BeGole stated in the release.

But Ryan Bates, executive director of End Gun Violence Michigan, said the bill supports a trend of “extremist” politicians militarizing gun culture in the state. .............(more)

It would be quite fitting to replace the bald eagle with an AR-15 as the national symbol. Irish_Dem Jun 2024 #3

Um. Lots of hunters in Michigan. Doubt many use an AR. Freethinker65 Jun 2024 #5

Why does any state need a “state” gun? Especially one that has been used to slaughter children. What is this about? I truly think republicans have lost their minds.

Watch the first segment of Rachel tonight, and the rants of Bannon et al.
Add a bump stock to that gun and you will see how they plan to accomplish Bannon’s call to kill.
Not a coincidence the Sock was made legal before the coming insurrection, this time with full fire power. There will be massive blood shed whether we win lose. I hope Biden and this admin are planning for more than the High Road to take this on.
Bannon needs locked away on treason death row.
I a suck ti my stomach with rage hearing Bannon, Kirk, Lake and all the talk of hunting us down. Calling the entire Biden family a Crime family, Jill too, and need to be taken down.
When did we get to the place where this is free speech? And not direct threats to the resident.

A state bird or tree or flower, sure, because those are things that are native to the state and can kind of symbolize it. But a state gun, just because people in the state own that particular one? Why?
