Everett Mayor Carlo DeMaria kicks off re-election campaign despite calls to step down

EVERETT, Mass. — Everett Mayor Carlo DeMaria was defiant, emotional, and passionate Thursday evening as he launched his re-election campaign, telling his supporters that his work as mayor was not done.

DeMaria, who has led the city as mayor for 17 years, said that he would, in fact, run for another term, despite recent calls from the city council asking him to step down.

"I just want to continue to do what is right for our city," DeMaria said.

The re-election launch comes on the heels of a report by the State Inspector General's Office which found DeMaria took $180,000 in bonus pay that the inspector general determined the mayor was not entitled to.
