If Question 4 passes, a new psychedelic industry could sprout up in Massachusetts. Here's what that means.

If Massachusetts voters approve Question 4 on Nov. 5, the state could see a new industry sprout up over the coming years aimed at offering people the chance to take psychedelic substances and training workers to support those experiences.

Starting Dec. 15, the ballot measure would allow adults 21 and up to grow, possess, and share limited amounts of five currently illegal psychedelic substances: psilocybin and psilocyn, found in mushrooms, and mescaline, ibogaine, and dimethyltryptamine, or DMT, from plants.

Advocates say psychedelics could help the mental health crisis, adding potentially life-changing treatment options for people with stubborn mental health issues including depression and addiction. Nearly one in five American adults are diagnosed in their lifetimes with depression.

“This can and will save lives — and really start to put us on a positive trajectory that our state, our veterans, our nation really needs,” said CJ LoConte, an Army combat veteran from Duxbury and proponent of Question 4 and its sponsor group, Massachusetts for Mental Health Options.
