Boston city councilors slam USPS for declining to testify at emergency hearing on mail delivery delays

Boston city councilors slammed post office leaders Tuesday for refusing to testify at an emergency hearing on mail delivery delays after complaints from residents across the city about inconsistent and unreliable postal service.

At Tuesday’s hearing, leaders of local unions representing United States Postal Service workers alleged mismanagement they said is contributing to a significant decline in service for customers in Boston. Nearly a dozen residents also testified about their experiences with mail that didn’t show up on time.

Several councilors also expressed outrage after they said internal emails from USPS were accidentally forwarded to council staff, in which a USPS executive accused the council of being driven by a political agenda.

A USPS spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment. But in September, a spokesperson for the Northeast region said in an email that mail service in the Boston area is “current and within performance standards” and that nearly all first class mail in Massachusetts during the last quarter of the federal fiscal year arrived “within a day of the service standard. On average, mail in the state is delivered in 2.5 days.”
