Former Massachusetts State Police Trooper Kevin Sweeney pleads guilty in overtime scandal
Suspended trooper Kevin Sweeney pleaded guilty in federal court in connection with the overtime scandal that has rocked the Massachusetts State Police and resulted in more than 40 troopers coming under investigation.
Authorities say Sweeney, a member of the now-defunct Troop E, pleaded guilty to embezzlement from an agency receiving federal funds and one count of wire fraud. A plea agreement filed in federal court asks for a prison sentence of 8 to 14 months, 12 months of supervised release and restitution of $11,103.
The U.S. Attorney's office in Boston said Sweeney was paid more than $5,900 in overtime cash for shifts he did not work. He is one of six troopers accused of skipping or partially working specialized overtime shifts on the Massachusetts Turnpike and Metropolitan tunnels system targeting aggressive drivers.
Sweeney, 40, of Braintree, earned $218,512. That included $97,000 in overtime pay.
