President Trump, reacting to virulent political pressure, yesterday changed his administrations policy and will now allow illegal immigrant families to stay together in custody even as Massachusetts Democrats fired up an effort to link Gov. Charlie Baker to the Republican presidents immigration policies.
Weve got a governor who every step of the way has been complicit with it, said Jay Gonzalez, a Democratic candidate for governor, who called the previous policy of separating children from their parents in custody cruel.
Gonzalez spoke at a rally yesterday afternoon outside the State House, where hundreds of chanting, sign-carrying protesters from various advocacy groups gathered to speak out against Trumps immigration policies, which have tightened enforcement, particularly along the border with Mexico.
Trump has made immigration a centerpiece of his agenda since the start of his presidential campaign. The issue has remained deeply controversial, coming to a head again over the last few days as images and audio emerged showing illegal immigrant children being held apart from their parents in cells near the border.

(88,150 posts)I am a Massite and yeah as you know, TT, a Democrat. The Boston Herald is RW. They love to stir shit.
I do not like a lot of things about Charlie, however he stood up to Trump and said he would stand with Sanctuary Cities like Sommerville. He said if federal funds were denied that he would find a way to cover them in our budget. Yes he reversed course recently on sending troops. He has done things to this state that I disagree with. I can't fault him when he gets some things right.
Not defending him, just saying he got a couple things right. Most Repukes never do.

(117,550 posts)I am glad that Gov. Baker has ended up on the correct side of the arguments about immigration and it is a bit of a relief that there are a few sensible Republicans around.
