Gov. Baker signs jobs bill, to veto miles-traveled tax plan

BOSTON — Gov. Charlie Baker has signed an economic development bill designed to spur job creation, improve local infrastructure and create more affordable housing in Massachusetts.

The measure, passed in the waning hours of the legislative session and signed by the Republican governor on Wednesday, also includes new tax deductions tied to college tuition savings accounts, updates liquor licensing rules for farmer-wineries and puts into law state regulations around daily fantasy sports.

Baker said the new law will support the state's innovation economy and "help develop the jobs of tomorrow."

The governor, meanwhile, was planning Wednesday to veto a portion of a separate transportation bill. It would have created an experimental program in which motorists would be taxed based on miles traveled as an alternative to the current state gasoline tax.
