from Jamie Raskin: (re: IRS tax filing deadline)

NEW: 100+ Members of Congress are urging the IRS to extend the April 15 federal tax filing deadline given the changes to the tax law contained in the American Rescue Plan. Proud to be leading this bipartisan letter with Congressman Bill Pascrell, Jr.: https://bit.ly/3cGZjqV.

Our constituents need more time to file and pay their taxes. With the April 15th deadline less than a month away, taxpayers and tax return preparers are still awaiting further guidance from the IRS about recent changes to the tax law. The IRS began the 2020 filing season nearly three weeks later than usual, creating less time for constituents and businesses to file. Compared with this time last year, 27% fewer tax returns have been filed and 31% fewer returns have been processed by the IRS.

Last week, Maryland Comptroller Peter Franchot announced an extension of the state income tax filing and payment deadline for residents by 90 days to July 15, in light of recent COVID-19 related changes to the state and federal tax law.
