(9,423 posts)With little experience she is taking over an enormous set of problems. I wish her the best, but have a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach

(7,794 posts)She'll have to be ever vigilant that her questions are asked and answered accurately. When you're new it's difficult to identify knowledgeable people who are trustworthy. She'll need to ask more often than answer. Humor and poise in equal measure are #1 in any sheriff's go-to tool kit. In her case, every word she utters is potentially a nail in her professional coffin.
Public service, the essence and backbone of government, is not easy or to be taken lightly. Metropolitan sheriffs carry a huge lot of influence over the whole country. They've created a club wherein inexperienced members are highly challenged to merely survive.

(3,782 posts)She has not run a department, but she has worked closely for over a decade with the people who do, with a significant stretch in Los Angeles. She'll be fine.

(96,043 posts)Is that while certain minimal requirements for the office of President are laid out in the Constitution, neither the office of sheriff, or any requirements for same, are so enshrined.
I cannot speak to various state constitutions, which in instances may well define qualifications for the office in that state.

(72,531 posts)... The last sheriff when I lived in Thurston County was a bar owner with no law training or experience. His son was a deputy and his wife was the dispatcher (who routinely sent the volunteer fire department to wrong side of the county).

(51,554 posts)Hutson was born in Philadelphia but raised in Houston and graduated from Tulane Universitys law school. She worked as a municipal prosecutor in Corpus Christi, Texas, as a police monitor in Austin, Texas, and finally as an inspector general monitoring the Los Angeles Police Department.
In 2010, she was selected to serve as the independent police monitor for New Orleans, which had recently created the post in the wake of incidents of police brutality after Hurricane Katrina.
Her tenure included disputes with federal police monitors and her onetime boss, former Inspector General Ed Quatrevaux, over their respective powers.

Big city sheriff is more of a policy role than kicking down doors and shooting people.

.
Opponent accused her of being a catspaw for people who wanted to "defund law enforcement and abolish jail." Didn't work.
